Biography

Dr Selim Adewale Alarape had Higher National Diploma (HND) in Animal Health Technology at the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Ibadan. He obtained Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and postgraduate trainings (MVPH) at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Dr Alarape has a robust training in Veterinary Public Health using aquatic animals as models. He has over 20 publications publications in revered journals covering Aquatic and Environmental Toxicology, Fish Vaccine production, Climate Change, Drugs, Chemicals and Heavy Metals residues in Fish and aquatic environment. His current research focus is on Molecular Characterization of Aquatic Animals (Feral and Cultured) Infectious Diseases (including emerging and re-emerging diseases) of Public Health Importance in Nigeria arising from environmental contamination and/pollution. Based on the preliminary study, the research has revealed the effects of relationship between environment-animal-human. He is a recipient of BEP/CRDF Global Travel Grant 2015 to attend Biosafety and Biosecurity Training Course in Fort Collins, Colorado, United States of America, and Biorisk Management Enhancement Grant (BMEG) 2016 (A grant to train Researchers across Nigeria on Biorisk Assessment and Management within and outside Laboratories). Aside publishing in revered journals, he is a reviewer to international journals like Turkish Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Veterinarski Arhiv, University of Zagreb, BioMed Central (BMC) Public Health, Onderstepoort Journal of Veterinary Research, among others. He is a member of several Learned Societies including Association of Aquatic Veterinarians of Nigeria (AAVN), International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID), International Veterinary Vaccinology Network (IVVN), American College of Toxicology (ACT), BactiVac Network, International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) and Junior Faculty, Global Emerging Pathogens Treatment Consortium (GET).

Research interests

Aquatic and wildlife disease epidemiology and toxicology, aquatic immunology (vaccine production, efficacy testing, and vaccine delivery), one health, climate change, emergency preparedness, biosafety and biosecurity

Projects you're working on

I am currently working on fish disease epidemiology (infectious and zoonotic), and development of formalin-killed vaccine against Aeromonas and Flavobacterium in fish
