Biography

I am an early career researcher, and currently hold a lecturing position at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science at the University of Nottingham. Prior to this I worked at Oxford University and completed my PhD studies on Johne's Disease at the CSIRO Australian Animal Heatlh Laboratories and The University of Melbourne.

My research interests include investigating host/pathogen dynamics during bacterial infections and the identification of virulence determinants for vaccine/diagnostic test development. Recent work has focused on mastitis in dairy cattle caused by Streptococcus uberis and bacterial diseases of fish, focusing on streptococcal and lactococcal infections. This work has included the evaluation of the role of sortase anchored proteins in the virulence of S. uberis and the comparison of virulent and avirulent strains of S. uberis to detect pathogen & host factors critical to the pathogenesis of bovine mastitis. My current work also includes the functional annotation of Streptococcal genomes by analysing the effect of gene disruption using high density DNA sequencing and identifying specific genes and proteins essential for virulence.

Research interests

Streptococcal biology, mastitis, streptococcosis in fish, transposon insertion sequencing, comparative genome analysis
