Biography

Dr. Zakia Goodwin in a veterinarian scientist with a unique background in both clinical veterinary medicine as well as research in infectious diseases. As a government veterinarian in Antigua and Barbuda Zakia developed expertise in veterinary public health and epidemiology, managing several national projects aimed at preventing the introduction and spread of infectious livestock diseases. Zakia acted in the role of Chief Veterinary Officer for and extended period representing the country in Regional Animal Health and Veterinary Conferences and also served as key stakeholder in the development of and implementation of national animal health policies. During her time in Antigua, Zakia also maintained a small private practice offering clinical and surgical services to companion animals.
As a graduate student researcher Zakia focused on infectious diseases with a special concentration on immunology. Her research project investigated the immune responses to a live attenuated double mutant Brucella vaccine in domestic cattle.
After completing a one year position as Biological Scientist at the University of Florida, Zakia decided to return to full time research and is now pursuing a PhD in the UF College of Veterinary Medicine. Her current research focuses on mucosal immunology particular as it relates to mucosal vaccine development and administration.
