Biography

Dr. Giana Gomes received her veterinary degree in 2003 from the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE) in Brazil where she also completed her MVM in shrimp diseases. She later on completed her PhD in aquaculture at James Cook University, Australia.

Before joining City University of Hong Kong in March 2019, she was a lecturer in aquaculture at James Cook University, Singapore. Prior to that appointment, she worked in a range of academic, governmental and industry positions, including Aquatec Ltd and Genearch Aquacultura Ltd in Brazil. In Australia, she worked at James Cook University, the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of Queensland, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, The Fish Vet and The Yield (Agriculture Technology Company).
She is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the scientific journal Aquaculture (Elsevier).

In 2016, she was awarded the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources Science and Innovation Award which recognises the best emerging young talent in rural Australian industries.

Teaching

Dr. Giana Gomes has teaching experience in aquaculture subjects such as Aquaculture of Tropical Species, Introduction to Aquaculture, Sustainable Aquaculture and Aquaculture Systems Design.

 

Research interests

Dr. Giana’s research focusses on early identification of disease within aquaculture farms using environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques and water quality monitoring (environmental sensing) associated with microbiome. She has a particular interest in integrating new technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) with molecular techniques to solve disease problems in aquaculture farms.
