Biography

Dr. Tonny Kabuuka is post-doctoral scientist at the Pirbright Institute with the PoxWorld group. Dr. Kabuuka has worked with African swine fever, Foot-and-mouth disease and Lumpy skin disease viruses. He has a background in Veterinary Medicine, Molecular virology, and genetic engineering of viruses (Makerere University, Uganda, University of Pretoria, South Africa and Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, Germany). Dr. Kabuuka desires to contribute to research leading to new or improved vaccines and diagnostic tools for emerging animal and one health diseases.

Research interests

I am interested in developing improved vaccines for poultry (Newcastle disease and Infectious Bursal disease), Cattle (Lumpy skin disease) and porcine (African swine fever).

Projects you're working on

1) Rational design of vaccines for Lumpy skin disease

2) In Uganda -

Developing novel poultry vaccines and one diagnostic kit to enhance control of Newcastle and Gumboro diseases for poultry agro industrialization in Uganda (National Agricultural Research Organisation (Entebbe) 2022 to 2025) Development of efficacious FMD and ASF vaccines specific to Ugandan virus strains (National Agricultural Research Organisation (Entebbe) 2019 to 2024)
