Biography
Rory graduated in Pharmacy from the University of Ouro Preto and went on to obtain a PhD at the same University, where he developed peptide and chimera vaccines against visceral leishmaniasis using immunoinformatics approaches. As a vaccinologist and immunologist, he conducted two years of post-doctoral fellow working at the Biological Sciences Research Nucleus, leading immunological and research on vaccine development for Chagas disease and Leishmaniasis. In January 2021, he took up the joint position of post-doctoral scientist in PRRS Immunology Group at The Pirbright Institute. His research is focused to improve the understanding of the interactions between porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome viruses and the immune system and to exploit this to develop next-generation vaccine

Projects you're working on
Currently, I am working on an EU Horizon grant. As part of the REPRODIVAC consortium which aims to develop innovative vaccines and diagnostics for endemic and zoonotic reproductive pathogens of livestock to improve animal welfare, reduce antimicrobial usage in farming, protect public health with a ‘One Health’ perspective, and strengthen the profitability of food animal systems. The new vaccines and diagnostics will be further developed and made accessible to users by the industrial partners involved in the project. Thereby by using the latest technologies in vaccine and diagnostic development REPRODIVAC will improve animal health and welfare, productivity and sustainability of the livestock sector, as well as human health.
