Biography
Dr. Benedicto is a Veterinary Surgeon and Lecturer at Makerere University's College of Veterinary Medicine Animal Resources and Biosecurity in Uganda. He is a member of the RTC scientific research team at COVAB Makerere University. Dr. Benedicto holds a Master's degree in Animal Science and Agriculture from Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in Japan. Currently, pursuing his PhD at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. His doctoral research focuses on Understanding FMD occurrence and risk factors, evaluating FMD immune response in vaccinated cattle, and assessing the effectiveness of current intervention strategies in Uganda to control FMD, as the country strives to progress to the advanced stages of the PCP-FMD. Throughout his academic and professional journey, Dr. Benedicto has demonstrated his expertise with 5 research publications as the first author and 24 others as a co-author. Born in Uganda in 1987, he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Medicine from Makerere University in 2014. Dr. Benedicto has received specialized training in One Health, Foot and Mouth Disease Investigation, Progressive Control Pathway Support Officers for Foot-and-Mouth Disease, Working with the GFRA scientific committee, Social Entrepreneurship, and ITM method of East Coast Fever prevention through vaccination and Tick-borne disease control. From 2013 to 2017, he worked in Uganda's Veterinary Pharmaceutical sector as a technical consultant and marketer. During his time as a Marketing Manager for ERAM Uganda Limited, a pharmaceutical company, he actively promoted and popularized nationwide cattle vaccination against East Coast fever supported by GALVmed, the Bill Gates Foundation for global livestock development. He was also involved in the backyard poultry vaccination project against Newcastle disease using the Thermostable vaccine in Eastern Uganda. Dr. Benedicto also handled sales and marketing functions for multinational R&D livestock input companies such as MSD, Pfizer/Zoetis, Merial, Kruuse, Hipra, VMD, Hebei, among others. He was GFRA conference organizing committee and repertoire 2021, currently, GFRA conference organizing committee and session Chair and presenter 2023 in Uganda. Furthermore, Dr. Benedicto completed a one-month internship with a Japanese R&D medical business enterprise, JOKOH, in 2018. He is Certified PCP-FMD Support Officer (PSO). He is also certified in Foot-and-Mouth Disease Investigation Training Course for East Africa 2018 organized by EuFMD under FAO. Moreover, he served as the Hokkaido region Coordinator-Japan chapter for Kakehashi-Africa from 2018 to 2019. Additionally, he was the General Secretary of the Obihiro Africa Research Network (OARNet) from 2019 to 2020. His dedication to veterinary medicine, research, and community outreach reflects his commitment to advancing livestock health and agricultural development in Uganda and beyond.
