Biography
I graduated with a Second-Class Upper Division in Applied Microbiology from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi Nigeria in 1997, and recipient of the Department of Biological Sciences best graduating student in Biological Sciences. I was subsequently employed as a Graduate Assistant in my alma mater and eventually obtained a Masters in Medical Microbiology from the same department where I studied the relationship of the expression of coagulase and antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus clinical strains. I am presently a PhD student in Medical Microbiology and Clinical Research at the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology Faculty of Clinical Sciences, University of Jos Plateau State Nigeria. I had a brief stint working on the impact on phenotype and virulence of a mobile genetic element the Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome mec in Staphylococcus aureus Clinical strains in Galleria mellonella model. I am presently a Lecturer I/ Research Associate at the Africa Centre of Excellence in Phytomedicine Research and Development (ACEPRD) University of Jos Nigeria and Research Scientist with the International Foundation Against Infectious Disease in Nigeria (IFAIN) Abuja Nigeria. I am a member of several professional bodies to name a few are: American Society for Microbiology (ASM) , Bacterial Vaccine Network ( BactiVac) UK , International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID) and American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH). Thus far I am a recipient of three travel grants to conferences and workshops from BactiVac UK , Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) UK and Phages for Global Health USA. I am presently working on a project with collaborators from the University of Alabama USA, University of Minnesota USA and University of Cambridge/ Wellcome Sanger Institute UK.
Research interests
I am interested in studying respiratory pathogens such as bacteria and viruses of public health importance. In this regard I am interested in the virulence of the microbes, antimicrobial resistance and control strategies. Other major interest includes the molecular epidemiology of pathogens in humans and animals and the use of phages in the control of bacterial infections in human and animal.
