Dr Chidiebere Emmanuel Okechukwu, PhD, FRSPH, is a distinguished Nigerian-born healthcare scientist, public health researcher, and clinical echocardiographer whose career seamlessly integrates public health epidemiology, vaccine development, and clinical sciences across multiple continents. Born on July 1, 1992, in Aba, Nigeria, and hailing from Ugwuoba in Enugu State, his journey from a curious student of physiology to a globally recognised scholar reflects a profound dedication to advancing health equity, disease prevention, and innovative biomedical interventions.
Interest in Public Health Epidemiology and Disease Prevention
From his formative years, Dr Okechukwu exhibited a keen interest in understanding disease patterns and health determinants at the population level. This passion guided his academic pursuits, starting with a Bachelor of Science in Human Physiology from Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 2015, where he focused on cardiovascular physiology. Recognising the importance of disease prevention and health promotion, he expanded his expertise through a Master of Science in Physical Activity and Health Promotion at the University of Rome Tor Vergata in 2019. His research on cardiac rehabilitation and exercise's role in cardiovascular recovery highlighted the significance of lifestyle interventions in managing chronic diseases.
Driven by a desire to address broader public health challenges, particularly infectious diseases and health disparities, Dr Okechukwu pursued a PhD in Public Health, Microbiology, and Infectious Diseases at Sapienza University of Rome, completing it in 2023. His doctoral research concentrated on epidemiological factors affecting occupational health, with a specific focus on the mental health impacts of circadian rhythm disruptions among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work underscored his commitment to understanding disease patterns, occupational vulnerabilities, and strategies to mitigate health risks among vulnerable populations.
Engagement in Vaccine Development and Infectious Disease Control
Building upon his epidemiological expertise, Dr Okechukwu has shown a strong interest in vaccine development as a critical tool for infectious disease control. His research has explored the epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases, with a focus on optimising immunisation strategies to enhance coverage and efficacy in diverse populations. His work emphasises the importance of culturally informed approaches to vaccine uptake, addressing barriers such as misinformation, access disparities, and vaccine hesitancy.
Bridging Public Health, Clinical Practice, and Policy
In addition to his research, Dr Okechukwu's clinical expertise in echocardiography complements his epidemiological pursuits, allowing him to translate population-level insights into patient-centred care. His work at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust involves diagnosing and managing cardiovascular conditions, while his public health perspective informs strategies for disease prevention and health promotion at community and institutional levels.
As a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health (FRSPH), he actively contributes to health education, policy development, and advocacy initiatives aimed at strengthening health systems and improving vaccination programmes. His extensive publication record, comprising over 100 peer-reviewed articles, addresses topics such as infectious disease epidemiology, cardiovascular risk prevention, mental health, and culturally tailored public health interventions, influencing both clinical guidelines and health policies worldwide.
Community Engagement and International Collaboration
Dr Okechukwu's commitment to translational research is exemplified through his involvement in community-based exercise rehabilitation programmes for cancer patients in Canada, as well as his leadership in studies examining lifestyle behaviours among nurses during the COVID-19 era. His multilingual proficiency in English, Italian, and Igbo facilitates effective communication across diverse populations and international research teams.
His dedication to advancing vaccine development and public health epidemiology continues to drive innovative research and community initiatives, aiming to improve disease prevention strategies, vaccine acceptance, and health outcomes globally. Married and committed to his faith, Dr Okechukwu remains passionate about leveraging science and compassion to create healthier, more resilient communities worldwide. Research interests
