Biography

Dr. Baratang Alison Lubisi obtained her Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVMCh) degree from the then Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA) in 1998. She obtained a Master of Science (MSc), Cum Laude, from the University of Pretoria (UP) in 2005, and is in the process of completing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with UP. She also completed a variety of short courses with various institutions from 1999 to date.

 

Dr. Lubisi started her career as a research veterinarian at ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute – Exotic Diseases Division, where her duties included performing laboratory diagnostic work for African Swine Fever (ASF) and Foot and mouth disease (FMD), executing animal experiments, and conducting biological security and safety and quality assurance duties. She later became Head of Diagnostics and was appointed as the Head of the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) ASF Reference laboratory within the same division.

 

In 2008 Dr. Lubisi joined the ARC-OVI’s Virology Section as its Head and also managed the OIE reference laboratories for Rift valley fever (RVF), a lethal zoonotic disease, lumpy skin disease (LSD), Bluetongue (BT) and African horse sickness (AHS).

 

She has performed a number of disease outbreak investigations, epidemiological baseline surveys, laboratory capacity evaluation, and laboratory and field personnel training in a number of African countries on behalf of international organizations such as the OIE, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN), and Arab Authority for Agricultural Investment & Development (AAAID).

 

Dr. Lubisi has contributed to numerous national and international conferences, meetings and workshops, authored and co-authored articles in peer-reviewed journals, is a member of 2 editorial boards, and reviews research proposals and articles for international funding bodies and journals.

Research interests

Definitive research interest is diagnostic test development, host pathogen interactions at cellular and immunological levels, pathogen interaction in co-infection scenarios and effect on the host, and pathogen similarities and differences at biological, physico-chemical and molecular levels.
