Dr Tshilwane is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria, where she teaches Veterinary Parasitology and Immunology. She completed her PhD in Veterinary Tropical Diseases which focused on the development of DNA vaccines for heartwater in sheep and evaluation of host responses to vaccination. Her research focus is mainly on veterinary immunology and vaccinology where she studies host (ruminants, horses, pigs) immune responses to infection and vaccines as to understand immune mechanisms required for protection and apply this knowledge to rational vaccine design.
