Research Assistant in Molecular Parasitology

Closes: 1 December 2023

Location: University of Nottingham

Hours: Full Time

Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract

Salary: £27,584 to £33,804 per annum (pro-rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience.

About the role:

Applications are invited for a full-time research assistant position in the laboratory of Catarina Gadelha, to join a programme of research on key aspects of African trypanosome surface membrane biology. For this extracellular parasite, the cell surface is the primary point of interaction between the organism and the environment – that being the human host or the fly vector. Successful infection and transmission rely on the molecular interactions that take place at this interface. The post holder will provide research support to the group, being involved in a programme of work funded by the BBSRC to understand and disrupt the trypanosome cell surface, with an emphasis on pump-priming vaccine development. The post will support exciting projects using host infections, quantitative proteomics, molecular cell biology and bioinformatic approaches.

Qualifications, experience and competencies:

Candidates should hold a BSc in Biological Sciences or related subject area (or be near to completion of such). Successful candidates will have previous experience in molecular cell biology and demonstrable skills in data analysis. Previous experience in growth, genetic manipulation and cell biology of trypanosomes (or transferable experience from other systems) is desirable but not essential.

Application:

Applicants should include a cover letter briefly describing their research skills to date and current research interests, together with an up-to-date CV.

Dates:

Shortlisting of candidates will be completed within 1 week of close of applications, with interviews to follow within 2 weeks after that.

This post is available on a fixed term contract until 30 September 2025. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours per week). Job share opportunities may be considered.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Catarina Gadelha, catarina [dot] gadelha [at] nottingham [dot] ac [dot] uk. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
